Rebel Recovery Florida
By All Paths, By Any Means...

About

Love. Compassion. Empathy. Respect.

History

Rebel Recovery was founded in name by Chad Sabora, Robert Riley II, and Justin Kunzelman in 2016, in response to Justin seeing his friends and community members in South Florida experiencing a crisis of accidental drug poisonings and injustice against people who use drugs. Chad and Robert sent Naloxone and sterile use kits, which Justin distributed from the trunk of his car. In January of 2017, Justin and Nancy McConnell formed the agency and Rebel Recovery Florida, Inc. was established as a non-profit. The two went on to cement Rebel as Florida’s first peer-led agency intentionally aimed at serving people who use drugs and those in or seeking recovery. Rebel Recovery started integrating Certified Recovery Peer Supports when a local hospital began working in conjunction with Palm Beach County, EMS/Fire, and Southeast Florida Behavioral Health Network to provide supportive services and system navigation to individuals that had experienced an accidental drug poisoning (ADP). This pilot aimed to connect people with medication and supportive services to reduce the risk of continued ADP. The pilot was successful and Rebel’s reputation for low threshold supportive services was born.

Since its foundation, Rebel has gone on to hire 6 full-time Peer Specialists and has 11 full-time employees serving the needs of our community. In addition, they’ve become an accredited state-wide training provider through Florida Certification Board, become an accredited Recovery Community Organization, brought Medication Assisted Recovery Anonymous to South Forida, and developed one of the largest Naloxone distribution networks in Florida. Rebel has stayed true to its street level Harm Reduction roots and continues to innovate services for people actively using drugs. They became the first organization in Florida to provide drug contamination testing kits. They continued to build on historical programs of efficacy through sterile use supplies, syringe disposal services and were instrumental in expanding access to, and elimination of stigma against Buprenorphine and Methadone for the treatment of Opiate Use Disorder. One golden thread has and will always remain at Rebel, compassion, empathy, love, and respect for drug users and those in or seeking recovery.
